Job Description

About the Project

We are building federated dataspaces inspired by initiatives such as Catena-X, Eclipse Tractus-X, and Gaia-X. Dataspaces will enable secure, standards-compliant, and sovereign data exchange across industrial and regulated ecosystems. Our infrastructure is designed to be provider-agnostic, supporting deployment across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and DigitalOcean. We aim to abstract the complexity of dataspace participation and deliver a seamless experience to data providers and consumers.

This is not limited to connector development.

The scope includes the full architecture of the dataspace:

  • Identity and trust management (DID, DAPS, OAuth2)
  • Semantic metadata modelling and knowledge graphs
  • Policy-based access control and contract negotiation
  • Federated service discovery and data catalogues
  • Data governance, auditability, and lifecycle management

You will be part of a cross-functional team contributing to an ambitious and highly impactful infrastructure platform from the ground up.

Role Overview: We are looking for two QA Engineers whose primary strength is programming, with a real working understanding of what software testing is and at least some hands-on testing experience to go with it. Our automation codebase is written in Playwright with JavaScript, and we test a complex, production-grade platform. You will start by contributing to existing test suites under mentorship, and grow into someone who designs and owns automation for entire modules of the platform.

The successful candidate will be someone with a solid programming foundation, a clear grasp of what testing actually does for a software product, and some practical experience of having done it, whether that comes from a formal QA role or from being a careful developer who genuinely tests the work they ship.

We are not expecting a seasoned QA expert. We are expecting someone who knows what testing is for, can name and explain the common methodologies, understands the difference between unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, and has at some point applied that knowledge in practice. Two kinds of people we particularly want to hear from:

  • Junior developers with strong scripting skills who have grown an interest in testing through their own work - writing tests for their projects, hunting their own bugs, and wanting to make that the core of their career.
  • Mid-level candidates with strong scripting and real software testing work experience who want to deepen their automation craft on a serious platform.

Responsibilities

  • Write, maintain, and extend automated end-to-end tests using Playwright and JavaScript.
  • Investigate test failures, isolate root causes, and raise a clear, reproducible defect report.
  • Contribute to manual exploratory testing where automation is not yet in place.
  • Collaborate with developers during sprint planning and code review to ensure testability is considered up front.
  • Participate in defect triage, regression cycles, and release verification.
  • Maintain and improve test infrastructure, including CI pipelines that run the test suite.
  • Use AI tools efficiently to accelerate research, drafting, and routine code generation while taking full responsibility for the correctness of everything you commit.
  • Continuously improve your knowledge of testing methodology, automation patterns, and the platform you are testing.

Job Requirements

Primary working hours aligned to UK business hours (09:00 - 17:00 UK time), Monday to Friday (working hours can be redefined and adjusted as per requirements of the team)Required QualificationsA solid foundation in programming fundamentals: variables, control flow, functions, recursion, data structures (arrays, objects, maps, sets), error handling, and basic algorithmic thinking.Fluency in at least one programming language. Node.js / JavaScript is preferred but not mandatory; strong candidates from Python, Java, Go, C#, or similar will be considered, provided you are confident you can pick up JavaScript quickly.Practical scripting skill - you can automate a repetitive task on your own machine without being told step by step.Comfortable working in a Linux command line environment (basic file navigation, permissions, process management, simple shell scripting).Working knowledge of Git and GitHub - branching, pull requests, merge conflicts, and code review hygiene.Demonstrable evidence of your programming work - for example, a public GitHub profile with personal or academic projects we can read.Strong written and spoken English.A working understanding of what software testing is and why it matters - common methodologies (functional, regression, smoke, exploratory), test design basics (positive/negative paths, equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis), and the difference between unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. Some hands-on testing experience. This is required, but we are deliberately open about the form it takes:Formal QA / SDET work experience, orDeveloper experience where you have meaningfully tested your own work (writing unit/integration tests, designing test cases for features you built), orSubstantial personal or academic projects in which you tested your own code with discipline.● For Mid-level candidates, we expect this to include real software testing work experience in a professional setting.● Honesty, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to be coached.● Willingness to participate in our live coding interview with webcam on, screen shared, and AI assistants disabled.Nice to HavePrior experience with Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or other browser automation frameworks.Professional QA / SDET work experience in a software company - especially relevant for the Mid-level candidates among our applicants.Familiarity with more advanced test design techniques (decision tables, state-transition testing, risk-based testing) and the broader test pyramid mindset.ISTQB Foundation Level certification.Familiarity with API testing (Postman, REST Assured, supertest, or similar).Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, particularly GitHub Actions.Docker basics - building images, running containers, and understanding why we use them.Cloud and Linux server experience - provisioning a small server, deploying a service, and basic networking.Full-stack development exposure: building a small backend service, working with HTML/React, and integrating an API end-to-end.Efficient use of AI coding assistants - you know when to reach for them and when not to, and you write prompts that get useful answers without wasting tokens.
