Specific Job Description
Primarily will carry out duties in both Neuro OT and Neuro ICU with equal importance and responsibility.
Will work in shifts, as decided by the coordinator in Neuro Anaesthesia & Neuro ICU according to Hospital policy .
During such period (night hours or on holidays) may need to anaesthetize neurosurgical cases under supervision of the On-Duty Consultant Anaesthetists.
Responsibilities in the Neuro OT
Anesthetize the patient for neuro surgery under the guidance of consultant.
Pre anaesthetic assessment (PAC) will be carried out for all OP & IP patients
Will provide monitoring/sedation for simple neurosurgical procedures done by neurosurgeons.
After surgery/procedure will accompany the patient out of the OT to recovery ward or ICU.
Advice for fluid, analgesics and oxygenation with and without ventilation under the guidance of neuro Anesthesia consultant.
Will assess neurosurgical patients in the recovery ward for their discharge to the ward or day-care.
Responsibilities in the Neuro ICU
Take hand-over from the Specialist finishing duty in the preceding shift.
Sign the notes and comments written by his predecessor. Any event that has taken place in the preceding shift, but has not been noted in the hand over document will be taken as if have happened during his/her shift, for which he will be held accountable .
During his duty hours s/he will make rounds, will record any event that takes place during his/her shift. Write report on his/her shift, either him/herself or by the resident, in which case s/he has to countersign.
Will attend any visiting Consultant during patient rounds. If for any reason s/he is busy with some unavoidable reason(s) will delegate the responsibility to the resident on-duty for the shift.
Will perform bedside procedures, like, arterial lines, central lines, lumbar punctures, NG tube placement, and urethral catheterization as advised by the NICU consultant.
Will accompany patient to and from the Neuro ICU to other department(s), like, for CT, MRI etc. For such simpler case s/he may depute the resident to accompany the patient, with consent from the Neuro- ICU Consultant.
Will teach basics to the residents/nurses. During the shift s/he will keep in touch with the Neuro ICU Consultant, either physically (during office hours) or over telephone (beyond office hours).
Will brief the patient’s relative(s) (in Neuro ICU) if and when asked to do so by the involved Consultant or Neuro ICU Consultant.
